2001: A Space Odyssey 1968
A group of primates in Africa’s desert fight at the dawn of humanity. Suddenly, a mysterious black monolith appears, influencing one of the ape-men and allowing him to use a bone as a weapon: the first tool of human ancestors has been found. In the year 2001, 4 million years after the previous scene, a spacecraft discovers the same black monolith behind mysterious signals coming from the moon’s surface. The signals are heading towards Jupiter. Eighteen months later, astronauts David Bowman and Frank Poole travel to Jupiter’s shadow on the spacecraft Discovery. The spacecraft is equipped with HAL 9000, the most advanced artificial intelligence computer in the world. And of course, the latter has its own plans… Based on a story by Arthur C. Clarke, this film is considered a “symbol” by many, but some did not like it. It is clear that “2001” contains many religious subtexts. HAL, the most famous “living” computer in the films, plays the most important role in this work. The scenes on the moon shown in the film were shot over a year before humans set foot on it and completed before people landed on Earth. After Neil Armstrong’s travels, Kubrick’s adherence to yet undiscovered truths down to the smallest detail is surprisingly striking. 2001 undoubtedly defines the emergence of “intelligence” as the greatest step that distinguishes humans from animals and poses one question among thousands: What is the next difference? What is the next step in evolution? Was there an external force that initiated the first one? If so, what awaits us this time?.
