13-year-old Ruthie Carmichael and her mother Rita are struggling to make ends meet, despite Rita working multiple jobs. After their landlord evicts them, Rita uses her looks to find a boyfriend who lets them stay at his place. Eventually, Ruthie convinces her mother to head East for a better life. When they run out of money and their car breaks down, they find themselves in a small town called Fat River. Rita starts working as a waitress at a local restaurant to make ends meet. When they finally have enough money to rent their own place, they begin to settle into their new life. Ruthie befriends a transgender waitress named Peter Pam, while Arlene takes Rita under her wing. The townspeople become like family to Rita and Ruthie. But just as everything seems to be going well, a mortgage broker named Vick Ward convinces Rita to take out a high-interest loan. Just when it seems like their lives are falling into place, Rita finds herself facing homelessness once again, and the price she pays to survive will change their lives forever. Enjoy the movie…
