During the Huaihai battles of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, Captain Guzidi of the 9th Infantry Division was tasked with fighting until the retreat order was received. Despite heavy casualties and dwindling supplies, Guzidi’s most loyal soldier surrenders before the retreat order is given. Refusing to believe his friend, Guzidi insists on continuing the fight at all costs. When he realizes that reinforcements have abandoned the battlefield and his men may have died in vain due to his stubbornness, Guzidi angrily launches a solo attack on enemy trenches, surviving but waking up in a hospital without limbs. Learning that his company was recorded as “missing” as there was no witness to their fate, Guzidi vows to prove the sacrifices and honor of the forty-six men under his command and embarks on a journey to unravel the mystery of the missing regiment.
