Craig is a puppeteer with unique talents struggling to make ends meet. His wife Lotte works at a pet store and constantly annoys Craig with the quirks of her job. Desperate for money, Craig stumbles upon a job opportunity at a mysterious company where he meets a woman named Maxine who catches his eye. However, Maxine shows no interest in Craig. One day, Craig discovers a secret portal at the company that leads him to inhabit the body of actor John Malkovich.
