Chungking Express is a film by Wong Kar-wai, which he shot with a very low budget in just a few months while taking a break from editing the sound recording of The Ashes of Time, the second film of his last film In the Ashes of Time. It is a “interim film”. The film is still playing in our cinemas with its director’s style rather than its plot. Wai, who skillfully uses visual expression elements, not only obtains a narrative language that perfectly fits the cosmopolitan, chaotic and fast life of Hong Kong, but also successfully emphasizes the difference between personal and social perception in the emerging spatial-temporal situation in a postmodern situation. The film is about two police officers, PC 233 (Takeshi Kaneshiro) and PC 633 (Tony Leung), who are trying to start a new chapter in their lives after being abandoned by their lovers. Apart from the situation they are in and the Midnight Express cafe they go for lunch, there is no common ground in the film between two characters who have nothing in common. The way these two misguided police officers try to regain their hopes is so beautifully told with small surprises and witty dialogues that we think it would be unfair to tell the plot of the film to the audience for the first time. For those who want to discover a new cinema language, Chungking Express is a good start….
