The American Civil War has finally come to an end, leaving behind a trail of destruction. A Southern soldier, Inman, struggles to cope with the scars of war and holds on to one thing in his life – his beloved Ada. Inman and Ada dream of a life where they can be together and free from the struggles of the past. However, the deep-rooted issues of the nation will not let them escape so easily.
