Cyrano de Bergerac 1990
Cyrano de Bergerac, a royal musketeer, is a refined figure who combines courage, romance, and powerful poetry. However, there is a major obstacle between him and winning the hearts of women: a huge nose! When young and beautiful Roxana catches the attention of the handsome newcomer Christian, Cyrano is sure his love will go unrequited. Determined to help Christian woo Roxana, Cyrano starts writing poetry for him, despite Christian’s lack of romanticism and ability to please women. Roxana is led to believe that Christian is the one behind the poems, when in fact it is Cyrano. Depardieu’s portrayal of Cyrano is so powerful on screen under Rappeneau’s direction that it serves as a lesson on how a true adaptation should be done. With a César award and an Oscar nomination under its belt, this adaptation stands as one of the most memorable versions of Edmond Rostand’s unique play.
