Deep Rising 1998
Stephen Somers wrote and directed this $50 million sci-fi action film shot in Vancouver and the North Pacific. Set in the South China Sea, the story feels like a mix of The Adventures of Poseidon, Alien, and Die Hard. High-tech thief Trillian (Famke Janssen) is caught stealing jewels on her first voyage aboard the luxury cruise ship Argonautica and is imprisoned. After a virus causes the ship’s communication system to malfunction, the ship collides with a massive underwater creature. Death surrounds John Finnegan (Treat Williams) and others as they board the Argonautica. Surviving Trillian, Simon Canton (Anthony Heald), and others speak of sea monsters, but Hannover (Wes Studi) dismisses them until the toothy, squid-like creature unfurls its tentacles and reveals its presence to everyone.
