New York journalist Selena (Jennifer Jason Leigh) rushes to the small town where her long-lost mother Dolores (Kathy Bates) is imprisoned for a murder she committed. As she investigates, she uncovers the truth behind the incident with the help of an elderly maid (Judy Parfitt) in the town. Her troubled childhood and the family conflicts she experienced growing up slowly come to light.
