In a story set in 1988, a young man named Donnie Darko is drawn into a mystery by a creature that is a mix of a rabbit and a human, which he encounters unexpectedly one night. According to the creature, there are only 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, and 12 seconds left until the end of the world. Donnie is unable to shake off the shock of this information and is forced to distance himself from his social life as he carries the weight of this secret.
