East of Eden is a 1955 American film directed by Elia Kazan and based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck. The screenplay was written by Paul Osborne. The film, starring James Dean, Julie Harris, and Raymond Massey, won Jo Van Fleet an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
