During World War I, Cal Trask (James Dean) competes with his brother Aaron (Richard Davalos) for their father’s (Raymond Massey) love. East of Eden is a 1955 American film directed by Elia Kazan and based on the novel of the same name by John Steinbeck. The screenplay was written by Paul Osborne. The film, starring James Dean, Julie Harris, and Raymond Massey, won Jo Van Fleet an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. The film was also nominated for Oscars in the Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Screenplay categories. It received awards from various ceremonies such as the Golden Globes and Cannes Film Festival.
