Irwin is a journalist in Los Angeles who is known as a “spy detective” due to his dedication to uncovering the truth and seeking justice. He has angered many with his columns and works tirelessly to ensure that criminals are brought to justice. As an undercover drug investigator, he meets Stanwyck, a man sentenced to death for bone cancer, who asks Irwin to kill him. With multiple personalities, Fletch’s true nature remains a mystery.
