Fried Green Tomatoes 1991
Despite its modest plot, “Fried Green Tomatoes” became one of the hits of 1991. The film revolves around the friendship of two women who develop a bond in a nursing home. Evelyn Coach, struggling with a difficult marriage and middle-aged depression, befriends Ninny by chance at the nursing home. Ninny shares the story of a friendship she witnessed in her youth on each visit: the friendship of Idgie and Ruth, who faced many challenges in 1920s America amidst black and white conflict. Through Ninny’s tales, Evelyn is able to overcome her own problems and find a renewed sense of purpose in life. This interesting film, originally titled “Whistle Stop Cafe,” is a simple yet heartfelt production.
