Stanley Kubrick’s return to filmmaking after a seven-year hiatus, this film focuses on a group of Marine volunteers and portrays their experience during the Vietnam War. Based on Gustav Hasford’s novel The Short Timers, the first half of the film depicts the volunteers’ brutal training under drill instructor Sgt. Hartman. The second half follows the events in Vietnam through the eyes of the completely shattered Marines.
