In 1960s London, love, innocence, jazz, and revolution unfold as inseparable duo Ginger and militant Rose ditch school, talk about love, religion, politics, and hair styles, and dream of more than their tired mothers’ captive family life. But when the Cold War clashes with the sexual revolution and the threat of nuclear apocalypse looms, the close friendship of the two girls is interrupted by the conflict of survival instincts and desires. Sally Potter’s latest film, a vibrant portrait of 1960s England through the eyes of a young girl, draws inspiration from the director’s childhood fears of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
