Connor O’Neal (Keanu Reeves) is a man who always avoids taking responsibility and spends his time on sports betting. When a banker close friend asks for his help to pay off his debts, the banker tells him that he can no longer give him free money. He advises him to work and earn money, and asks him to coach a youth baseball team sponsored by his company. Reluctantly, Conor accepts the task. Coaching black children in a troubled area of Chicago, Conor becomes unexpectedly attached to the kids. These 10-year-olds teach him life lessons. Things get even more interesting when young teacher Elizabeth Wilkes (Diane Lane) gets involved. Eventually, Conor begins to realize that enlightenment and self-discovery can come in many forms.
