Hysteria 2011
In 1880s Victorian London, young doctor Mortimer Granville grows tired of his colleagues’ medieval practices and struggles to find work. He ends up at the door of Dr. Dalrymple, who treats women with “special vulva massages” for hysteria. Mortimer becomes skilled at the technique and attracts long lines of patients outside Dalrymple’s office. However, he eventually experiences a “professional deformation” and begins working on a device that can automatically massage the vulva. With the help of his friend, elite inventor Edmund, they invent the vibrator and become popular among women. Meanwhile, Mortimer becomes involved in a love triangle with the doctor’s two daughters. Directed by Tanya Wexler, “Hysteria” premiered at the 31st Istanbul Film Festival’s Akbank Galas section.
