In the Name of the Father 1993
Irish youth Jerry Conlon, with simple concerns, arrives in 1970s London. Lost in the flow of life, he starts spending time with young people living a free life in a squat. He is arrested in a police raid after being wrongly convicted of the 1974 Guildford bombing, which had nothing to do with him. In that era’s Britain, human rights were disregarded in the name of counter-terrorism unlike today. Under the pressure of intense physical and mental torture, Jerry’s innocent father also goes to prison as an accomplice. Over the years, with the help of a female lawyer, Jerry begins to fight against the injustice he has faced. We don’t know how the political power of such incidents happening in many countries around the world influenced giving 7 Oscars to Jim Sheridan’s film, but when two powerful actors like Daniel Day-Lewis and Emma Thompson come together, the impact is undeniable.
