Spoiled Ellie Andrews (Colbert) runs away from her millionaire father (Walter Connolly) who is trying to keep her from marrying a useless playboy. During her journey to New York, she meets an unemployed journalist named Peter Warne (Gable). When their bus breaks down, the constantly bickering duo embark on a wild hitchhiking adventure. Peter hopes to find a job by writing about their adventures. But when the runaway heiress and the cheeky journalist fall in love, things take a different turn.
Directed by Frank Capra, It Happened One Night became the first film to win all five major Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Best Screenplay.
