Lawrence, a Canadian genius, may have his most ambitious film to date with “Film”. The movie tells the story of a painful love story set in Montreal. Lawrence is a literature professor and college writer, while his girlfriend Fred is an artist who makes a living as a director’s assistant. Their relationship is unique, passionate, and strange, evident from the start as they write poems on each other’s bodies and make a list of things that will diminish their enjoyment of the relationship. Everything changes when Lawrence announces he wants to be a woman. Dolan follows Fred and Lawrence’s relationship over the span of a decade, using striking colors and empty spaces in unconventional ways. The result is not just a challenging cinematic experience that transforms Dolan’s style and ideas, but also a poignant and heartbreaking portrayal of love.
