Living with his deadbeat father, young man Charley gets a job working for a horse trainer during summer break. He quickly befriends a horse named Lean On Pete. When he learns that the horse is going to be sold to be slaughtered after getting injured during a race, Charley decides to rescue Lean On Pete and they set out to find a new home in the rural America.
