Shanghai, 1942, during the ongoing Japanese occupation of World War II, a wealthy and unconventional woman named Mak enters a café, searches, sits, and waits. She begins to remember… The story starts in 1938 in China. At that time, Mak was not the bold woman she is now, but a shy young girl named Wong Chia Chi. Her father fled to England during the Second World War. In her first year of university, she meets her classmate Kuang Yu Ming, who later forms a theater group to bring together students dedicated to patriotic ideals. Wong, one of the main actors of the group, impresses the audience and Kuang with her talent. Kuang recruits students from the group to carry out a comprehensive assassination plan against Yi, who collaborates with Japan. Each student has a role in the plan; Wong’s role is to befriend Yi’s wife, gain her trust, and lure her into an illicit relationship. Wong fully commits to her role and the plan unfolds as scripted, until an unexpected event forces her to flee everything. Shanghai, 1941. Wong leaves Hong Kong. Meanwhile, Kuang reenters her life. Kuang asks Wong to become Mak again in order to kill Yi, who collaborates with the puppet government’s secret service. Wong returns to her former role, approaching her target. This final move will bring everything to a close.
