Death row inmate Lawrence Musgrove (Puff Daddy) makes his final visit from his wife Leticia (Halle Berry) and son. The head of the death row team at a rural Georgia prison overseeing the execution preparations, Hank (Billy Bob Thornton), finds himself in a crisis when a rookie, Sonny (Heath Ledger), breaks down during the inmate’s “last walk.” A heated argument ensues, resulting in a tragic outcome as Sonny takes his own life. Hank, devastated by the events, quits his job and walks away from everything. Leticia, left to pick up the pieces after her husband’s death, starts working as a waitress at Hank’s usual diner, and their paths strangely cross. After a passionate night together, Hank is shocked to learn that Leticia is the wife of the man he sent to his death.
