The Island of Bougainville is on the brink of civil war and Mr. Watts, who teaches the local children, starts reading Great Expectations by Dickens to them. This introduces the main character, Mr. Pip, into Matilda’s life. Matilda starts writing Pip’s name in the sand and decorating it with seashells.
