My Fair Lady 1964
“My Sweet Angel” is a noisy and fun musical; a strange combination of Broadway and Hollywood scenery; a true work of art from the mid-1960s, a time when the studio system and veteran masters struggled to make new films suitable for the new world. Furthermore, with its undeniable compelling main story based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, a film that will become a real modern legend. At the heart of the story is an irresistible hate-love relationship: strict linguist Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) and the street girl Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn) he chose for his “social experiment.” At every step of Eliza’s journey – from a poor girl resisting Higgins’ tough training, to a colleague who loves him very much, and finally a charming lady trying to ward off superficial suitors – we share her feelings. George Cukor’s vibrant sensuality was in harmony with the extraordinary chemistry of this star duo; Additionally, Cukor had all the resources to provide charm (Cecil Beaton was in charge of art direction and costumes). There are also irresistibly beautiful songs.
