Homer Hickam, a young man living in the town of Colwood, seems to have no choice but to continue his father’s profession of mining. However, when Sputnik is launched into space in October 1957, Homer becomes fascinated with rockets and how they are made. He decides to conduct experiments with his three friends through trial and error, but everyone in town, especially his father, thinks it’s nonsense. Only one school teacher respects their efforts and hard work, convincing them that they could win first prize in the National Science Fair.
