On the Ice 2011
In the remote icy town of Barrow, Alaska, Inupiat teenagers Qalli and Aivaaq have grown up as close as brothers. Barrow is a town steeped in tradition and tight-knit family relationships, but also a place where hip hop and snowmobiles reign. During a seal hunting trip with their friend James, a heated argument leads to James’ death. In a panic, Qalli and Aivaaq lie and claim James’ death was an accident. Barrow is consumed by grief; Qalli’s protective father begins to suspect something, while Qalli grapples with feelings of guilt. For the first time in his life, he is navigating the thin ice of existence alone.
