Passing 2021
Passing tells the story of two African American women, Irene Redfield (Tessa Thompson) and Clare Kendry (Ruth Negga), who choose to live on opposite sides during the height of the Harlem Renaissance in late 1920s New York. After a chance encounter one summer afternoon brings them back together as old childhood friends, Irene reluctantly allows Clare into her home where Clare quickly endears herself to Irene’s husband (André Holland), family, and soon, their wide social circle. Irene realizes that her once stable existence has been upended by Clare, and the film delves into an exploration of obsession, pressure, and the lies people tell themselves and others to maintain carefully constructed realities.
