Suspiria 1977
The film, the first part of Argento’s Le Tre madri (Three Mothers) trilogy, tells the story of evil forces trying to wreak havoc on the world. The second film of the trilogy is Inferno from the 1980s, and the last one is the 2007 film, The Third Mother. Suspiria is considered Argento’s best film and a classic of horror cinema. The film follows American ballet student Susie Banyon as she travels to Germany to study at a famous dance school. On her way to the school in a violent storm, Susie witnesses a student running from the school and talking about strange things for the first time. Later, the school gate closes and despite Susie introducing herself, the man behind the gate does not let her in. Susie spends the night in a nearby town, where a person who escaped from the school and their refugee friend are brutally murdered that night. The next day, Susie manages to go to the school and starts studying, but faints during class after being affected by a crystal held by one of the women working at the school. Following the advice of the school doctor, she follows a strict diet and eats alone in her room. Strange events start happening at the school, and Susie, always weak and sleepy, can barely keep up with them. After the blind pianist of the school is killed by his guide dog, Susie and her friend Sarah try to unravel the mystery of the school in the next room. One evening, Sarah dies while trying to understand the secrets of the school’s teachers, as Susie is once again weakened. The next day, it is said that Sarah left the school suddenly and for no apparent reason that morning. Trying to find Sarah, Susie reaches out to her psychiatrist and learns that Sarah was possessed by witchcraft. Additionally, there was a woman who was killed years ago for being a witch at the school they attended. Moreover, Susie finds a secret section in the school using the words she remembered from the delirium of a student who escaped from the school on the first night, and suspects that the teachers perform witchcraft rituals here at night. Accidentally entering the room, Susie encounters the lead witch “Mater Suspiriorum” and kills her, then escapes from the crumbling school.
