Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 2007
Johnny Depp stars in the film as Benjamin Barker, who is wrongly imprisoned and swears to take revenge not only for the cruel punishment but also for the tragic consequences that befell his wife and daughter. Helena Bonham Carter plays the obsessively determined accomplice Mrs. Nellie Lovett. Barker assumes the identity of Sweeney Todd and returns to his old barber shop above Mrs. Lovett’s bakery. His goal is to keep an eye on Judge Turpin, who sent him to prison for a fake crime in order to steal his wife Lucy and young daughter from him, along with his treacherous friend Beadle Bamford. Mrs. Lovett informs Barker that his wife was poisoned by Judge Turpin, who had seduced her. Meanwhile, Barker kills his rival, the flamboyant Italian barber Pirelli, by slitting his throat when he threatens to reveal his true identity. Uncertain of what to do with the body, Mrs. Lovett sees this crisis as an opportunity to revitalize her struggling business and suggests filling her pies with human flesh. Sweeney discovers that the judge has taken his teenage daughter Joanna into custody. Joanna, confined to the house, is noticed one day by the young sailor Anthony, who is desperately in love with her and vows to rescue her and marry her. In the meantime, Mrs. Lovett’s pies quickly become a hit in London, and sales skyrocket. Mrs. Lovett dreams of gaining respect, marrying Sweeney, and living by the seaside, with the addition of adopting Toby, Pirelli’s former assistant. However, Sweeney is consumed with thoughts of revenge and will stop at nothing, even if it means hurting everyone and everything around him.
