I believe there is a connection between cinema and memory. Memory can be heaven or hell. Renowned director Miguel Gomes (“Our Beloved Month of August”) returns with a fantastic and somewhat peculiar story in two parts. The story focuses on Aurora, a cantankerous woman living in present-day Lisbon. When Aurora is hospitalized, she asks her neighbor Pilar to inform Gian Luca about her condition. Pilar’s quest to fulfill her friend’s wish takes us back fifty years to Africa. There, we see Aurora once again, this time as the beautiful wife of a wealthy young farmer. However, Aurora is having an affair with her husband’s closest friend, Gian Luca. The heartfelt, poetic stories are narrated by the elderly Gian Luca’s voice.
