The Elephant Man 1980
In the frightening 1880s, Dr. Frederick Treves encounters John Merrick, also known as the Elephant Man, in a traveling circus. Merrick, with his grotesque appearance and unstable demeanor, is mistreated by the cruel circus master Bytes. Treves arranges for Merrick to be taken to the hospital, where he discovers that behind Merrick’s terrifying exterior lies a deeply sensitive and humane soul. The hospital staff, initially fearful of him, eventually grow to accept Merrick. It becomes clear that Merrick’s condition is due to a neurological disorder called “neurofibromatosis.” Life in the hospital is not easy, as the night watchman exploits him for profit. Bytes reappears, kidnapping Merrick and taking him back to his former life of misery on the European mainland. Merrick’s only hope is to escape and return to England.
