Telly Paretta is a grieving mother dealing with the death of her 8-year-old son. When her psychiatrist tells her she has been imagining a child who never existed for the past 8 years, she is shocked. However, when Telly encounters another patient with a similar experience, she sets out to prove that her son is real and that she is not crazy.
