The Grapes of Wrath 1940
Tom Joad (Henry Fonda) has just been released from prison for killing a man and is hitchhiking back to his family’s farm in Oklahoma. Along the way, he meets an old acquaintance, Casey (John Carradine), a former minister who has lost his faith. Casey tells Tom that drought, dust storms, and new farming and banking practices have destroyed what was once a prosperous Oklahoma. When they arrive at the Joad farm, they find that the bank has also foreclosed on their land, forcing the Joad family to prepare for migration. The next morning at dawn, the twelve-member Joad family loads all their belongings onto a dilapidated truck and sets off for the “Promised Land” of California.
