In the first week of January 1900, on a luxury passenger ship that travels regularly between Europe and America, The Virginian, a black Filipino firefighter named Danny Boodman, finds a newborn baby in a box with T.D. Lemons written on it. He adopts the child, naming him Novecento after the year he was found. Novecento never leaves the ship, where he becomes a legend for his exceptional piano playing skills. After his father Danny dies in an accident when Novecento is 8 years old, he continues to live on the ship, captivating everyone with his music.
