The story takes place in East Germany during the time when the Berlin Wall divided a city in two. The Lives of Others, which has been etched in the memories as one of the greatest films in German cinema history, has also managed to win the hearts of a large audience. It tells the story of Captain Gerd Wiesler, a officer who is tasked by the government to conduct surveillance on a famous artist through a secret intelligence service in order to maintain the regime’s legitimacy. Wiesler realizes that the artist he is monitoring poses no threat and does not engage in any activities against the regime. He later discovers that there is a different motive behind the assignment, but he secretly becomes more involved in the artist’s life every day. Over time, he realizes that he has unknowingly helped the artist and a secret bond develops between them.
