A French high school girl meets a wealthy Chinese man on a boat on the Mekong River in late 1920s Indochina and agrees to travel with him. She will later fall in love with the man’s servant and experience her first love. This passionate relationship, shaped by racial tensions and values such as money and status, will mean a lifetime of true love for the Chinese man. Adapted from the novel by award-winning author Marguerite Duras, based on her own life story.
