The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance 1962
Senator Rancy Stoddard returns to the Wild West town of Shinbone for his friend Tom Doniphon’s funeral. When a reporter inquires about what he’s doing in Shinbone, he recounts how his career as the “man who shot Liberty Valance” began. Coming to Shinbone as a lawyer to establish law and order in a town where guns have replaced justice, Rancy is brutally beaten by Liberty Valance when a stagecoach is illegally seized. In an attempt to find a way to bring Valance to justice, Rancy teaches the people of Shinbone how to read and write. Eventually, he takes up a gun and stands up to Valance. The man who shot Liberty Valance; was deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant and was placed under the protection of the National Film Registry in 2007.
