Shy but somewhat emotionless Doctor Walter Fane is married to Kitty, a woman who is unhappy in their marriage due to her husband’s workaholic nature. When the doctor realizes that his wife is cheating on him, he decides to travel to a village in China where a deadly cholera outbreak is taking place. Forced to accompany him, their life in the village becomes a turning point for both of them.
