The Patience Stone

Storyline

Syngué sabour, pierre de patience 2012

Director-writer Atik Rahimi returns to the screen eight years after his award-winning film Earth and Ashes. Based on the director’s bestselling novel, the Oscar-nominated film takes place in Afghanistan or any war-torn country. We find ourselves in a devastated room in Afghanistan, where a beautiful woman in her thirties takes care of her paralyzed husband. She starts confessing to her silent husband one-sidedly, talking about her childhood, troubles, disappointments, loneliness, dreams, and desires. As her husband silently listens, he unknowingly becomes a “rock of patience” for her, protecting her from misfortunes, pains, and torments. Rahimi wrote The Patience Stone in memory of Afghan poet Nadia Anjuman, who was killed by her husband in 2005: “I am tired of hearing the same talk about Afghan women, oppressed women, and victims. But when I went to Afghanistan, I met very strong women.”
