American Isabelle Archer, who inherits a large fortune, goes to Europe to find herself. Despite the efforts of Caspar Goodwood, who follows her all the way to England, Isabelle skillfully avoids friendship with him, but cannot easily get rid of her cousin Ralph. Isabelle’s efforts to get rid of the parasites around her bring her to Madame Merle and through her, to Gilbert Osmond, who is married to Osmond. She soon realizes that Osmond only treats her as a new member of his valuable art collection. In fact, Madam Merle is Osmond’s indispensable mistress. And she realizes that they are playing a game to take the inheritance left by Isabelle from her. Isabelle escapes from this terrible duo and runs to Ralph, whom she realizes is the man she truly loves, but Ralph is living his last days.
