The Reaping

Storyline

The Reaping 2007

Katherine Winter (Hilary Swank) doesn’t believe in miracles; she believes in facts. As a former missionary in Sudan, Katherine turned her back on religion after losing her daughter and husband. Now, she seeks answers through scientific research rather than prayer. As a university professor, she leads the charge in debunking a series of supposed miracles, investigating crying statues from around the world, saint-like stains on walls, and bleeding palms. But when she is called to examine a series of strange events in a small town that the townspeople believe to be from God, Katherine and her partner Ben (Idris Elba) realize that miracles can be terrifying at times. The line between faith and superstition is dangerous, and they will learn just how thin it is. Hidden in the swamps and forests of Louisiana, Haven is a town where the rules of logic are rewritten. A child dies and the river turns blood red; this is just the beginning of ten biblical plagues that befall the town. For the first time in her professional career, Katherine cannot explain these phenomena with science. The townspeople believe that a mysterious girl named Lauren McConnell (AnnaSophia Robb) has brought God’s wrath to their doorstep. But Katherine sees a lost child in this girl, who is seen as a harbinger of evil. As Lauren is drawn into the dark heart of mysteries, Katherine uncovers her role in a conspiracy that will plunge the world into darkness.
