In the 1950s, freelance journalist Paul Kemp (Depp) leaves behind his life in New York to work for a small newspaper in Puerto Rico. He quickly discovers the inner workings of the American expatriates working at the paper. Kemp tries to avoid and protect himself from the self-destructive group that surrounds him.
