During the Cold War, a Russian submarine captain approaches Gloucester Island in Massachusetts to contact America but runs aground. Lieutenant Rozanov and his team of nine Russians come ashore to find a motorboat to rescue the submarine. They end up at the vacation home of New York writer Walt Whittaker, causing panic and paranoia in the small village when their true identities are revealed.
