Storyline

The Sheltering Sky 1990

A woman’s dangerous and erotic journey… At the beginning of the journey, a tourist knows when she will return home, but it is uncertain when a traveler will return, or if they will return at all. Kit (Debra Winger) and her husband Port (John Malkovich) come to the city of Tangier in Morocco as travelers after a ten-year marriage in New York. Despite their deep love for each other, they are unable to repair their relationship. Slowly delving into the depths of this new geography, they try to reach each other. Hoping to rekindle their troubled marriage, even their tormented souls, this journey leads them to tragic consequences. Bertolucci, in this film adapted from P. Bowles’ novel which Time magazine considers one of the top 100 books in English since 1923, questions the solitude and loneliness of the human soul. The chosen place for this exploration is the Sahara desert, the tangible expression of these concepts. With its magnificent visuals and colors, the film, which won a Golden Globe Award for Original Music, takes the audience to an exotic, erotic, deadly, and wild sensory center.
