The Thing

Storyline

The Thing 1982

We are in the South Pole. Two Norwegian researchers arrive at an American base after bizarrely trying to hunt down a Husky dog. The researchers die at the base, and the dog seeks refuge there. Pilot MacReady and doctor Copper investigate the incident by helicopter to the Norwegian camp. The camp, carrying clues to unexplained events, is in ruins. There are dead bodies around and a strange object in a frozen block of ice. MacReady and Copper are horrified when they return to their base. The seemingly innocent Husky dog has actually transformed into “The Thing,” capable of taking the form of any being it kills. John Carpenter’s 1982 remake of the 1951 Howard Hawks film “The Thing from Another World” stands out as a more faithful adaptation of John W. Campbell Jr.’s story “Who Goes There?” Carpenter proves he made the right choice by giving Kurt Russell another chance. Initially unsuccessful at the box office, this tension-filled film has since gained a cult status and become a pioneer of a new genre of science fiction/fantasy.
