Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) travels to an isolated region of Antarctica to conduct the most important research of her life. Joining a team of Norwegian scientists, Kate discovers an organism that has been lying beneath the ice for billions of years. But the time has come for the creature to awaken. During a simple experiment, the creature breaks free from the ice and begins to wreak havoc on the team. As Dr. Sander Halvorson continues his investigation, Kate teams up with helicopter pilot Carter (Joel Edgerton) to stop the creature from killing everyone.
