The Wind That Shakes the Barley 2006
In the mid-1920s, Ireland was still part of and under the rule of England. The oppression by English soldiers on the Irish people continued unabated. Damien was one of the thousands of people who witnessed the brutality. Feeling the need to do something about this violence, he eventually joined the Irish Republicans. However, peace and the new hardships it brought were on the horizon. The Wind that Shakes the Barley, one of Ken Loach’s most important films in recent years, won the Golden Palm at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.
