The Yearling 1946
After the American Civil War, Penny Baxter, a former rebel soldier, was one of the first settlers in Florida with his wife Orry and 12-year-old son Jody. The Baxter couple, who had previously lost two children, had different outlooks on life – Orry was tougher while Penny and their son were warmer and more loving. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, the film follows the strong friendship between 12-year-old Jody and a deer in the Everglades of Florida. Set after the American Civil War, the film captures the historical and social panorama of the era with a successful cinematic language, staying true to the main themes and essence of the novel. The exceptional performance of the film’s young protagonist, Jarman, earned him a special “Oscar” award for best child actor.
