Storyline

Haeundae 2009

Haneundae, located on the southeast coast of the Korean Peninsula in Busan, is one of the most visited places on the East Sea coast and attracts 1 million visitors annually. Man-sik, a native of Haeundae, lost a colleague in a tsunami while fishing at sea four years ago. Since then, he has not gone back to the sea. He runs a small seafood restaurant and is preparing to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Yeon-hee. Man-Sik’s brother works in the Coast Guard. One day, he saves the life of a high school student from Seoul who attacked him. As this daily relationship unfolds, geologist and tsunami researcher Kim Hwi notices activity signals similar to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami coming from the East Sea. Despite warnings from the Disaster Prevention Agency that it is not targeting Korea and will not cause harm, when he detects a megatsunami heading towards the Korean Peninsula, he quickly heads towards Haeundae. There, he meets his ex-wife, who he hasn’t seen in seven years, organizing a cultural event with their daughter, unaware that he is the father. Finally, Kim announces that a deadly wave with only ten minutes to escape is coming. Vacationers and residents of Busan enjoy the summer sun as a mega-tsunami hits Haeundae at a speed of 800 km per hour.
